| | Description | n the bestselling tradition of Play Like a Man, Win Like a Woman comes the breakthrough book that teaches women how to stop sabotaging their careers-and start getting ahead. For every professional woman who wants to get ahead-but feels she is at an impasse-NICE GIRLSDON'T GETTHECORNER OFFICE comes to the rescue. When overlooked for that special assignment or promotion, many women point the finger outwardly, looking for someone else to blame. Now, Lois P. Frankel presents a different view in her empowering career primer that helps women identify ingrained habits they learned as girls that may be holding them back, such as couching statements in a question, smiling inappropriately, tilting the head while speaking, and others. Only by overcoming these self-defeating behaviors will the 'nice girl' learn to leverage her power in the workplace-and claim the corner office she so richly deserves. | |

I am entitled to have my needs met too! Aug 11, 2010 After two years being out of law school and a stellar academic career behind me with good job experience I've been wondering why in the world I find myself in the position of calling up Old Navy and asking for my pre-college days stocking job back. After finding this book, I finally know the answer. I fully mastered the art of being a girl and the transition to womanhood mentioned in the book is something which completely escaped me until now. Even my best guy friends who know I'm intelligent have treated me like the little girl pet mentioned in the book and completely overlook me for professional purposes. What I like about this book is that the mistakes are followed by solutions that actually are practical and doable. Everyday now as I walk to places I repeat to myself "I am entitled to have my needs met, too!" And I feel the confidence building up within me. I fully believe the Good Lord Above led me to this book. As before finding this I was seriously beginning to think I had horns growing out of my head, but now I know the solution. I need to master the art of being a woman! And realizing that "I am entitled to have my needs met too!"
Mostly common sense, but excellent for self-assessment Aug 10, 2010 This book helped me reaffirm that I'm doing most things right; there are other things (like feeding people) that I do because I *choose* to do it and if that detracts from my professional persona, then so be it. Actually I think the "Don't feed others" rule is outdated in many of today's high-tech work environments - having food in the office, no matter who brings it, makes the office a better place to be. :-) But overall, I highly recommend this book.

a helpful manual Jul 22, 2010 In "Nice Girls Don't Get The Corner Office," Lois Frankel explores 101 problems women make in the workplace, including coaching tips of how to overcome them. This book caught my attention because I thought it was very relevant to today's business world, and interior company politics. Like it or not, unconscious gender behavior can negatively impact the way a person is seen and delay promotion.
Throughout the book, Frankel examines many behaviors that can get women in trouble--such as being overly chatty, willing to do other people's work, having an obsession with being liked, putting their work ahead of their own life, and remaining invisible instead of taking initiative. A bonus self-diagnostic quiz is located at the beginning of the book, while a list of good resources including books and organizations is located at the end.
I thought the book sent a good self-empowerment message, and succeeded in delving into feminine psychology and pointing out behaviors that aren't fit for the real world. A good example Frankel described is one of a forty-seven year old woman who is smart and experienced at her job, but is always passed up for promotion because she behaves more like a high school cheerleader, than a future manager (the problem apparently stemming from her unconscious wish to be liked and prior conditioning). Frankel points out that while certain behaviors may have helped women at the beginning of their careers, they must be frequently changed to match future ambitions. In fact, one of her tips is dress for the job you want, rather than the one you have.
If you're wondering why things at work aren't going the way you want them to, this book just may have your answer. But regardless, I thought the advice was well presented and definitely opens your eyes to different types of self-defeating behavior.

Great book Apr 28, 2010 This book is awesome, shows woman common mistakes in the workplace, teaches woman a lot about themselves! Love Amazon and this book!
Useful book Apr 27, 2010 I like this book. It offers very useful questionnaire which helps to reveal own unconscious and mechanical mistakes undermining professional image and reputation. I've used this questionnaire in a year after first reading and find that although I've reached definite improvements they differ from my own perception. The main body of the book is structured according to comprehensive groups of issues and contains simple and practical solutions.
